Glyphs (the importance of)

I realised only recently I had completely neglected owning glyphs, was I a fool?

Also a friend said they wouldn't work without buying the expansion packs, where they correct?

I dont think you need the expansion cos glyphs got introduced with a patch but I'm not sure. I'm the only one in the guild with Inscription as far as I know so if you want to get some ask me ingame!
